Today our seniors gathered for a blast to the past! Mrs. Dusenbery and their other 5th grade teachers saved 5th grade letters to their future selves. It was a great time to gather as a class, eat, and read their past letters. A special thanks to their former fifth grade teachers, Lakaia and Alayna for organizing the event, and their class advisors--Mrs. Gall and Mrs. Smith-- for setting up the pizza!

A large group of middle and high school teachers participated in a book study about The Anxious Generation throughout January and February. At their final session today, RESD Behavioral Health Specialist, Tracey Galgoci facilitated a thoughtful discussion focused on how teachers and schools can apply what they’ve learned.
The book study was collaborative, reflective, and meaningful for all involved. These educators exemplify lifelong learning, actively seeking ways to better support both current and future students. The Anxious Generation is a great read for anyone trying to better understand the complexities that the 21st century has presented.

Students in Mrs. Wolf and Mr. Grant's Practical Law class toured the Isabella County Courthouse and the new Isabella County Jail. The students met with Judge Black and Magistrate Miller to learn about court procedures and processes. Sheriff Main and Undersheriff Burns gave the students a comprehensive tour of the jail facility and took time to answer questions about the criminal justice process. Thank you to Chief Luke Sawyer for helping to coordinate the tours and for helping to chaperone the trip.

Today in Mr. Weiss' health class, students practiced life-saving skills by learning how to perform hands-only CPR and how to properly use an AED machine. Thanks to Nurse Alayna our students were able to build confidence and readiness to be prepared in emergency situations.

Next week at Shepherd High School we are celebrating the Winter Olympics with a spirit week and a Friday Closing Ceremony.

We are only about 2 months away from our spring testing days. Please use the time now to make adjustments to appointments or other calendar conflicts so that students can be sure to be in attendance for their tests.

Our Senior English class is participating in book clubs this trimester. Each week, students meet in their groups to share opinions, ask questions, and collaborate with one another. Students have even been treating their book clubs to snacks, donuts, and more! Great work, seniors!

Students in Coding Class brought their code to life using Micro:bits, turning lines of code into real actions on the board. Watching their programs work in real time made coding exciting, hands-on, and fun!

Thank you Counselors (Mr. Ross, Mr. Huber and Ms. Gall) for all that you do for the students of Shepherd High School.

Attendance Matters!
Missing just 2 days a month can have a huge impact over the course of the school year. Over the course of 4 years, this would lead to missing 80 days--more than one full trimester. We want to see you and work with you every day!!

WE'RE GOING TO SPACE! (kind of...)
Back in December, we posted about our team of students who submitted a proposal to the NASA Techrise Student Challenge. We are proud to announce that their experiment was selected as one of only 60 across the United States and will be floating around the stratosphere this summer after they spend the remainder of the school year building the experiment. CONGRATULATIONS to Alivia Kirchofer, Elijah Robinson, Eddie Radtke, Brayden Rountree, and Logan Lambert!
Watch for updates as this project progresses.

In her role as Regional Teacher of the Year, Mrs. Heather Wolf delivered a presentation to the State Board of Education in Lansing yesterday examining the impact of instructional coaching at the secondary level on teacher retention. It's so great to have our Shepherd educators making an impact beyond the local level. Great work Mrs. Wolf!! Pictured with State Superintendent, Glenn Maleyko, and Teacher of the Year, Corey Rosser.

Attendance Matters! As we continue working with families to improve attendance, we will be posting weekly information about attendance.
Winter is a time where illness can spread quickly, and we know that the decision for your student to go to school or stay home can be a tough one. Below is some guidance for when "sick" is too sick to attend. We hope this helps! As much as possible, we want our students to be here!

SHS Graduates find success in a lot of different ways!
As students prepare to build their class schedule preferences for the 2026-27 school year, please talk to your student about future plans and what classes will be best for the preparation of that future. Counselors will begin the scheduling process with students the week of January 20, so have those conversations now!
